Civil Registration Certificates
Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths became compulsory in Scotland on 1 January 1855. The original copies are held in New Register House, Edinburgh. Members of the public are allowed to carry out a general search of the indexes for a daily fee, the indexes are accessed via computer and the registration data is viewed on microfiche. In order to increase the likelihood of successfully finding the data that you seek, the fullest amount of information should be given- date and place of event, the names of parents or spouse, otherwise it is almost impossible for a successful search to be carried out unless the name is an unusual one - the maiden surname of a married woman should also be given as females are indexed under both married and maiden surname. Transcriptions carry no legal validity The addresses given in civil registration certificates are a very useful tool to finding family members in the census returns. Listed below is the information that one can procure from registration certificates.
